The Cabernet Glaze is a variation of the Chinese Blue Glaze but made with only one type of copper to achieve this pigment. The influences from making the Cabernet, or Copper Red, glazes originated from the Ming Dynasty type of pottery in China, in the 12th century, A.D. The red color is created by introducing carbon or depriving the atmosphere of oxygen early on in the firing process. Exposure to the smoky atmosphere converts the copper glaze from what would be a typical green glaze, to a wine-red color.
