This Gourd Vase shape is influenced by nature while the artistic glaze covering it is inspired by modern developments in glaze crystal formation.  The curvature of the vase provides a lovely accent for crystal growth.
The Midnight Blue Crystalline glaze is one of the newer glazes Ben has developed in his Crystalline Glaze Series.  The crystals are formed within the glaze along the surface of the vase during the cooling processes of the kiln firing.  Due to the unique chemical properties during crystal formation, no two crystals are ever alike.  This glaze lends itself to creating completely individualized pieces.
Mesmerizing, the lighter blue hues of cobalt crystals appear to float over the rich deep blue background as though they are moon jellies in the deep ocean.  This vase is sure to become a conversation piece in the home or office.  Measuring 4.25”w x 6"h.
Please Note: What appears to be white spots on the surface are reflections from photo lighting.

The Crystalline Glaze series was carefully developed over several years.  Ben Owen III methodically manipulated various glaze materials with the potential to create unique surfaces and patterns that are reflective of natural scenery in our world's environment.  Some outcomes resemble lichen on stone, lily pads peeking along a pond surface, or even blue moon jellies floating in deep ocean waters.
To achieve this rare find, the kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage crystalline growth at specific temperatures.  The glaze is applied by carefully airbrushing multiple layers of complementary glazes.  The presence of titanium- and zinc-rich ingredients promotes crystal development, while various pigments tint the crystals.  We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glaze!

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with year made (2020).
