A classic shape from the Owen Family that has been made for three generations and is one of the most popular forms that Ben Owen III enjoys creating.  Heavily influenced by the Mei Peng vases made in early Chinese clay culture.
The Cobalt Blue glaze was applied to the vase prior to loading the kiln.  The natural wood firing process with intentional wood ash exposure to the hot clay vessels creates a natural glaze from the minerals in the wood ash.  Melting upon contact with the vase, the Natural Ash Glaze forms.
The combed decorative lines add a visual and physical texture to intrigue the viewer.  A beautiful combination of skillful hand-turning and artistic vision for a unique outcome post-firing.  Truly a genius work of art.  Measuring 6”w x 7.5”h.

MultiLayer Glazes
While Ben III was in college in the 1990s, he was introduced to a spraying technique with an air-driven spray gun to build up layers of glazes on the clay surface.  With some experimenting, he was able to create a variety of finishes using accents of three or four different colors and using an ash glaze as a top coat to blend or bleach the underlying colors.  Some finishes are a base of iron yellow with cobalt blue or copper green covered with orange to silver developing from the overlapping colors. An ash glaze is applied as a final coat to the pot to create a layered effect.  Each pot is unique.

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the year made (1992) and is part of our "Pots From The Past" series.
