Turquoise Crystalline
The Turquoise Crystalline glaze from Ben Owen Pottery was developed over several years by manipulating glaze materials and tweaking the crucial cooling process used during the kiln firings.  This brilliant blue color is made from a combination of copper and cobalt.  Examples of blues like this have inspired Ben III from Middle Eastern pottery and the semi-precious stone, Lapis lazuli.  A range of colors is achieved through special application and firing techniques.  The crystals are formed within the glaze along the surface of the vase during the cooling process of a kiln firing.  Due to the unique chemical properties during crystal formation, no two crystals are alike.  This glaze lends itself to creating completely individualized pieces.

Work by Juliana Owen
Juliana Dare Owen (b. 2002), the second child of sixth-generation potter Ben Owen III, has been playing in clay since she was very small.  Juliana began selling her work in our retail store when she was around 13 years old.
After graduating high school from Uwharrie Charter Academy in 2021, Juliana continued her education at Boston College.
In 2025, Juliana earned her B.S. in Management with a concentration in Marketing, and a double-major in Studio Art with a concentration in Architectural Studies.  Juliana has begun her career in Chicago, IL.
In her spare time on holiday, Juliana enjoys turning clay alongside her father, Ben Owen III, at their family studio in Seagrove, NC.  This shared time together provides a space for Juliana to express her artistic nature while honoring her family and her namesake, Juliana Busbee.
Ushering a traditional approach to design through the contemporary-modern revolution of art, Juliana has launched her first self-employed business in self-sustainable, single-piece handbags.  Juliana pitched her handbags at the Boston College Shark Tank competition in April 2025.  She won second place and funding to start her business. She is now beginning manufacturing and working on the company.
