This Melon Han vase shape is influenced by pottery forms made during the Chinese Han dynasty. The curvature of the vase provides a lovely background for displaying the miraculous crystals.
The Lily Pad Green Crystalline glaze is one of Ben’s adventurous developments with the copper pigment that provides a nice array of green hues along the contour of the vase. The crystals are formed within the glaze along the surface of the vase during the cooling process of a kiln firing. Due to the unique chemical properties during crystal formation, no two crystals are alike. This glaze lends itself to creating completely individualized pieces.
Resembling lily pads on the surface of a lake or pond, this Melon Han Vase in Lily Pad Green is sure to become a favored piece in the home or treasured as a gift. 5.25”w x 9”h.

Lily Pad Green
The Lily Pad Green Crystalline Glaze series was carefully developed over several years. Ben Owen III methodically manipulated various glaze materials with the potential to create unique surfaces and patterns that are reflective of natural scenery in our world's environment. Some outcomes resemble lichen on stone, lily pads peeking along a pond surface, or even blue moon jellies floating in deep ocean waters.
To achieve this rare find, the kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage crystalline growth at specific temperatures. The glaze is applied by carefully airbrushing multiple layers of complementary glazes. The presence of titanium- and zinc-rich ingredients promote crystal development, while the pigment copper tints the crystals and background green. We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glaze!
