The Nebular Purple resulted from experimenting with cobalt glazes fired inside the wood kiln atmosphere. The slow cooling of the kiln creates light purple micro-crystals along the surface. A unique find that was a pleasant surprise! Will hold approx.12oz of liquid. Measuring 3.5"w x 3.75”h.

This line highlights shapes and forms made in a traditional Owen style of the early 1900’s folk pottery of North Carolina as well as influences from Asia. This traditional collection has been continued by several potters who have worked at Ben Owen Pottery since the 1960’s. The current line is made by potter Elizabeth McAdams, who works as a studio assistant and retail manager for Ben Owen Pottery.
Ben Owen III developed the Nebular Purple wood-fired microcrystalline series over several years. The outcome is the artistic rendition of a majestic nebula formation that telescopic space images portray.
To achieve this rare find, the wood kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage micro-crystal growth at specific temperatures and render this stunning final product. A small amount of the pigment magnesium tints the crystals light purple while a high concentration of the pigment cobalt tints the background a deep, rich blue.
