This vase is a result of Ben’s influence from shapes and forms in nature.  With an organic, from-the-Earth feel, this Gourd Vase fuses modernity with tradition.  The gourd design is a form that Ben’s grandfather made as well.  The curvature of the vase provides a lovely accent for the wood-fired micro-crystal growth.
The Nebular Purple resulted from experimenting with cobalt glazes fired inside the wood kiln atmosphere.  The slow cooling of the kiln creates light purple micro-crystals along the surface.  A unique find that was a pleasant surprise!  Measuring 7”w x 12"h.
Please Note: What appear to be white spots on the surface are reflections from photo lighting.

Ben Owen III developed the Nebular Purple wood-fired microcrystalline series over several years.  The outcome is the artistic rendition of a majestic nebula formation that telescopic space images portray.
To achieve this rare find, the wood kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage micro-crystal growth at specific temperatures and render this stunning final product.  A small amount of the pigment magnesium tints the crystals light purple while a high concentration of the pigment cobalt tints the background a deep, rich blue.  We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glaze!

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the year made (2024).
