This classic egg-shaped vase has been made for three generations of Ben’s family.  This form is heavily influenced by the Mei Peng style vases made early in Chinese clay culture.  With a modest approach to form that allows the glaze surface to receive the focus of attention, the Egg Vase is one of the most popular forms that Ben enjoys creating.
The melon lines along the contour of this vase are a design effect from observing nature to inspire variations on the form.  Ben Owen III often gathers ideas from the natural environment around him and this vase reflects that organic influence.  The form is thrown on the potter's wheel and then altered into a melon-like shape to create a unique design.  Measuring 5.5”w x 7.75"h.
Please Note: What appear to be white spots on the surface are reflections from photo lighting.

Ben Owen III developed the Nebular Purple wood-fired microcrystalline series over several years.  The Nebular Purple glaze is a recent creation from experimenting with cobalt glazes in the wood kiln.  The slow cooling of the kiln creates micro-crystals on the surface.  The outcomes resemble majestic nebular formations telescopic images portray.
To achieve this rare find, the wood kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage micro-crystal growth at specific temperatures and render this stunning final product.  We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glaze!
