This three-handled design is a result of Ben III’s studies of the clay culture during the Edo period of Japanese history.
The Lily Pad Green Crystalline glaze is one of Ben’s newest developments with the copper pigment that provides a nice array of green hues along the contour of the vase.  The crystals are formed within the glaze along the surface of the vase during the cooling process of the kiln firing.
Due to the unique chemical properties during crystal formation, no two crystals are alike.  This glaze lends itself to creating completely individualized pieces.
Resembling lily pads on the surface of a lake or pond, this Edo Jar in Lily Pad Green is sure to become a favored piece in the home or treasured as a gift.  Measuring 4.25”w x 6”h.
Please Note: What appears to be white spots on the surface are reflections from photo lighting.

The Crystalline Glaze series was carefully developed over several years.  Ben Owen III methodically manipulated various glaze materials with the potential to create unique surfaces and patterns that are reflective of natural scenery in our world's environment.  Some outcomes resemble lichen on stone, lily pads peeking along a pond surface, or even blue moon jellies floating in deep ocean waters.
To achieve this rare find, the kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage crystalline growth at specific temperatures.  The glaze is applied by carefully airbrushing multiple layers of complementary glazes.  The presence of titanium- and zinc-rich ingredients promotes crystal development, while various pigments tint the crystals.  We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind glaze!

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with year made (2020).
