the formula of the glaze. The range of color is dependent on the atmosphere of the firing in the kiln. During the early stages of firing, at 1600° F, we purposely control the furnace to burn inefficiently creating carbon inside the kiln. The reaction of carbon, over a period of several hours, with the iron in the clay will create warm tones in the glaze and iridescent or opalescent qualities to the surface. The presence of wood ash coming in contact with the glaze accentuates the glaze with flashes of apple green and yellow tones to deeper brown shades on areas of the pot. The name copper penny was chosen after many customers, over the years, commented that it looked like the surface of a penny.

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the to Chinese Red pieces, there are some shapes made specifically for this glaze.
The color is achieved from several mixtures of copper in a glaze and fired to 2250°F. This glaze was first developed at Jugtown Pottery in the 1930s. After Jacques Busbee’s death, his wife Juliana requested that the glaze no longer be produced. From different accounts and research, the recipe for the glaze was lost. This glaze influenced Ben Owen Sr. when he established his own studio. After many attempts to re-create the glaze, he developed a similar recipe that was then handed down through the generations and Ben Owen III continues with his version of the glaze.

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the year made professional craft of clay by attending classes at the Rockingham Community College and gaining an apprenticeship with Sally Hayes and Noah Carlton. Bryan learned the basic techniques of over a 2-year span and approved for sale in 2012. The name is derived from the amazing photographs of actual stardust beamed back to Earth at the time from the Hubble Space Telescope. Green Stardust works require a kiln temperature meticulously controlled to over 2,300° Fahrenheit, with specific rising and falling temperature rates to encourage micro-crystal growth and render this stunning final product. The glaze is applied by carefully airbrushing multiple layers of different glazes onto a piece. Titanium-rich ingredients in the glazes promote crystal development. Copper tints the crystals green. Iron oxide is used to achieve the background color.

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the year made (2022).

Ben the glazing agent. Most pieces dedicated to Ash glazing are placed in the kiln with little to no glaze applied to the exterior. During the firing process, the wood is stirred occasionally in the firebox to give flight to the flakes of ash that are produced during the firing. Airborne ash flakes cling to the exposed areas of the pot and accumulate over time. As the kiln reaches 2300° Fahrenheit, the accumulated ashes begin to melt and form a natural glaze. When the wood-burning kiln is heated to over 2400°, the wood ash liquefies and runs down the side of the pot like honey. Ash may also be layered over other glazes. For example, when Ben was in college, he was introduced to a spraying technique using an air-driven spray gun that some potters use to build up layers of glazes on the clay surface. With some experimenting, he was able to create a variety of finishes using accents of 3 to 4 different colors. A glaze made from ash can be used as a top coating to blend or bleach the underlying colors. Some finishes are a base of an iron yellow with cobalt blue or copper green covering. Other colors of orange to silver can develop from the colors overlapping. No two pieces are exactly alike. Ben frequently places these in the wood kiln to accentuate the colors.

Cobalt Blue
The Cobalt Blue glaze has been used by the Owen family for over four generations. Early salt glaze wares made in the late 1800s were decorated with a cobalt blue glaze over the grey salt finish. Over the past 50 years, Ben Owen Pottery has made some cobalt-glazed pieces using a uniform coating of the glaze on the surface of the pots. Today, Ben uses a glaze similar to the older, original glaze. This newer Cobalt Blue is glossy and reveals a depth to the finish. Sometimes, Cobalt Blue is used to accentuate pieces that are fired in the wood kiln. These are called multi-layered glazes.

This piece is hand-signed by Ben Owen III with the year made (2022).

Ben Owen matte-crystal glaze that Ben Owen III developed over a 2-year span and approved for sale in 2012.

This piece is hand-signed by
