This creates a completely individualistic piece.  A unique texture is created when the piece is fired in the wood kiln over multiple days due to a thick ash accumulation from the natural wood-burning process.  This Natural Ash glaze is complemented by Ben Owen III’s Copper Penny glaze.  The Copper Penny glaze is applied to the surface of the piece prior to being placed inside the wood kiln.  Unusual micro-crystals formed on the surface of the piece from the natural mineral in the clay interacting with the natural ash accumulation from the wood used to fire the kiln.  \u003cbr\u003e   This Glaze is produced by relying on the wood-firing process as the glazing agent.  Most pieces dedicated to this glaze are placed in the kiln with little or no glaze applied to the exterior.  During the firing process, the wood is occasionally stirred in the firebox to give flight to the flakes of ash produced during the firing.  When these small flakes become airborne, they cling to the exposed areas of the pots and accumulate over a period of time.  As the kiln reaches about 2300 degrees Fahrenheit, the wood ash will liquefy and begin to run down the side of the pots, as if one had poured honey on the vase.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCopper Penny Glaze\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e   The Copper Penny Glaze is influenced by the amount of iron in the clay as well as the formula of the glaze.  The range of color is dependent on the atmosphere of the firing in the kiln.  During the early stages of firing, at 1600° F, we purposely control the furnace to burn inefficiently creating carbon inside the kiln.  The reaction of carbon, over a period of several hours, with the iron in the clay will create warm tones in the glaze and iridescent or opalescent qualities to the surface.  The presence of wood ash coming in contact with the glaze accentuates the glaze with flashes of apple green and yellow tones to deeper brown shades on areas of the pot.  The The Patina Green Glaze was first developed by Ben III, in the early 1990s while in college at East Carolina, as a glossy forest green made from the pigment copper.  When testing the glaze in the wood kilns back home at the family pottery, the results were strikingly different with many variations of color and surface.  If fired in the wood kiln with no salt added to the firing, the color will be a darker green with small crystals on the surface.  If finished in a wood and salt firing, the salt will brighten the color and create more blue-green hues with random small crystals on the was carefully developed by Ben Owen III over several years.  Various glaze materials with the potential to create unique surfaces and patterns were methodically manipulated during test series after test series until crystal formation became somewhat replicable.  Many of these crystal formations have been viewed as a comparison of various natural occurrences in the Earth’s environment.  Some resemble lichen on stone, lily pads floating along a lake or pond, moss on a tree trunk, and even blue jellyfish floating in deep ocean waters.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e    To achieve this rare find, the kiln temperature is meticulously controlled as it rises AND as it falls, to encourage crystalline growth at specific temperatures.  The glaze is applied by carefully airbrushing multiple layers of complementary glazes.  The presence of titanium- and zinc-rich ingredients promotes crystal development, while the pigment cobalt tints the crystals blue and the pigment iron tints that resembles icing on a cake.  In 1928, the Busbees of Jugtown entered a vase, made by Ben Owen, in the Dogwood festival with this white glaze.  The vase was awarded best in the show and from that Pottery after years of admiring and collecting Seagrove, NC pottery.  Bryan was especially drawn to early works from Ben Owen, Sr.  Between 2005 and 2008, Bryan formalized his studies in the professional craft of clay by attending classes at the Rockingham Community College and gaining an apprenticeship with Sally Hayes and Noah Carlton.  Bryan learned the basic techniques of wheel-throwing joined with an artistic approach to form and design.  Concentrating his studies on production firing in the electric and gas kilns, Bryan gained essential knowledge that would increase his own pottery-making endeavors. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e   Bryan and Ben Owen III connected over 16 years ago when Bryan visited Ben Owen Pottery with a piece made by Ben Owen Sr., Ben III’s grandfather.  Bryan was curious about the piece and wanted to learn more about the pottery tradition.  Bryan began volunteering to help fire Ben III’s wood kilns, and, learned valuable information.  After years of colleagueship and friendship with Ben III, Bryan is now a full-time studio assistant here at Ben Owen Pottery.  Many of his days are filled with mixing glaze recipes and applying glazes salt added to the firing, the color will be a darker green with small crystals on the surface.  If finished in a wood and salt firing, the salt will brighten the color and create more blue-green hues
